If $y=x^2$ can be $\pm x$ , why can't that apply to $-y$ numbers?
As in:
$6^2 = \pm 36$
the same way
$\sqrt{36} = \pm 6$

What could that possibly break?

Root of unity. Writing 6^2 = ±36 is equivalent to writing 6^4 = 36^2. It may seem like a trivial rewriting, but in this way you're now explicitly permitted to use complex analysis to solve for this.

the notation sqrt(36) refers to +6 always by convention. this is a very convenient notation and everyone will be irritated with you if you stray from it. if you want +/-6, just say +/-sqrt(36).

1=i^4
sqrt(36)=+/-6
sqrt(-36)=+/-6i
