What do you do when it can't find the paper you're looking for?

1) I check the website for the research group of the PI (or each PI if it's a collaboration), sometimes they have pdfs available w/in the publication list.
2) If that doesn't work, email the corresponding author asking for a copy. People want others to read their work, otoh really busy people won't respond to emails from randos.
