Electrons have energy and almost no mass, so they constantly move.
They want to move but are being strongly attracted to the protons. Similar to how a guitar string, when plucked, will vibrate because it has energy and wants to move but is "attracted" to the guitar (where it's attached).
Electrons are in 3 dimensions and aren't physically bound to anything, but their "vibrations" still follow periodic patterns.
The patterns get more complicated the farther from the nucleus they get and the more electrons are crammed together.
The numbers are ways of classifying the orbital patterns.
