Basically Copenhagen is right, wavefunctions only collapse with conscious observation. The universe is initially only a wavefunction of all its possible states and would've remained so forever, except some of its possible states include sentient life. The first conscious being in the first state to evolve one observes itself and collapses the entire universe into that state, making itself the only conscious being in that universe.
