Are parts of technology down to successfully verified theoretical science? Or was it all experiment and observation?

I don't know much about Science and so I'm unsure how to question what I'm thinking or if what I'm saying makes any sense.

For example, like the number of electron shells, we don't know they exist? I assume? But in such case has theory like this ever proved useful for technology?

Its verified in the sense that the predicted consequences of the model have been verified. No one has seen an " electron shell".

I looked into this first. I wouldn't of found that so easily. That's a perfect clear example of what I was trying to ask, there was theory of a state of something existing and then it was confirmed as being real, and applied into technology there after.
So thanks to pure thought, a discovery of something physical was made and then this was moved on to real world application.
