people who don't understand optics think that its all easily and inexpensively scalable.
many years ago i witnessed the review an engineering student's phd project design for an optical computer chip. the kid didn't know enough about optics to even understand what effect wavelength has on light so he designed his system with sub angstrom gamma ray lasers that are theoretically 100,000x more powerful that the strongest lasers that currently exist. "this is easy, i'll just keep on shirking down the laser without consequence until everything fits right" is what he said to himself before devoting a year of his life to a design that got laughed out of the room, he never thought to learn anything about optics during that year, ignorance was bliss to him, he sacrificed a year of his life for that bliss, he fixed it all up into something that pathetic enough for him to be given a degree out of pity.
that was the old days when you could still be critical of the kids and laugh in their faces when they did something dumb.
