Why five fingers? Practically single animal on the planet has five digits at the end of it's non-penis extremities.

Just speculating here but since we're all descended from sedentary opportunity feeders not unlike coral, tube worms, and anemones, I'd imagine that "5" worked for them for largely the same reason the "5" works for us. It's the lowest number of appendages needed to reliably entrap and manipulate an object.

Mutations can be advantageous, a disadvantage or neutral.
The opposing thumb is advantageous.
Having 4,5 or 6 could have just been a neutral mutation that was carried on because it was partnered with an advantageous mutation.

When you extend a finger, your brain is actually sending a signal to retract all your fingers, but then there's an additional signal telling one finger to override that command, which then lets you control your fingers individually. This is because the fine motor control only evolved later, and it was simpler to just add this override signal rather than rebuild the control system up from the beginning

I guess what I'm saying is that evolution doesn't really have a plan, and sometimes things just stick just because there's no immediate downside to it. So probably at some point there was something that had a reason to have five fingers, but then later we just happen to have five fingers because that's what we came from

There isn't a reason for believing 5 fingers are advantageous. This something could have just happened to have 5 fingers while being faster or stronger due to some unrelated reason.
