For instance, Thomas Pesquet only got in because he got into the top engineering school in France, worked in the aerospace industry in so many fields that he was knowledgeable on every aspect of aerospace tech and was a literal chad physically (black belt in judo, experienced scubadiver, mountain biking, kite surfing) and was also an experience pilot with 2000 hours as a private pilot.
That is what it takes to become a non american astronaut.
