Even if the universe was really deterministic, the human consciousness is good at creating the illusion of free will so life will go on as before once you think about other things. Nothing to worry about here, caring or not caring is the same it doesn't change how things work

Syncronistically the three cogs in your (pic related) answer your question for you. "Learning from your mistakes" are those three cogs that can take a deleterious cause (your fucking things up) and turn it into a positive effect (changing things so you don't fuck up again). Those cogs represent the variables that you have control over, and regardless of why you choose to control them, you either do or you don't.

Your rationalization for whether you choose to give a shit about bettering yourself is teleological and meaningless in a predetermined universe, but the choice itself is not as long as the consequences of that choice exist to give meaning to it in the context of your life and the lives of those around you.

I have long been thinking about this. The thing is that even if the past indeed determines us, the fact is that the future is not set into stone. Think about it, every time you think of a possible outcome, it "automatically" changes your future.

Another thing to consider is that this reductionist way of thinking tends to ignore phenomena such as emergence, which occurs when an entity has properties it's parts do not have on their own.

Consciousness may be considered as a particular emergent phenomenon. When a mind becomes aware of it's own awareness, it creates a sort of feedback loop from which all desires and decisions are created. This self-deterministic loop is the key to what I would call free will.

Its not random if its causal though, is it?

Why do people care about the plots of movies that have absolutely nothing to do with them - or even reality?

Our conciosness is basically just watching our lifes movie from a 1st person perspective. Of course our biology is going to react to situations based on genetics and outcomes, all still predetermined as part of the higer order.
