These things have happened 4 times (proven) before, because people kept lab-dogs as pets or sold test animal carcasses on markets. It's no big stretch to assume something similar happened here.

But that said, if an outbreak occurred in the same town as a US CDC BSL-4 lab, we'd never hear the end of it. The only defense we could offer would be a super thorough tracing to find exactly the animal source that it came from.

And when it happened in China, they sterilized the hell out of that first market before taking hardly any samples (preventing us from finding, say, the corpse or excrement of an animal that it might have leapt from), suppressed researchers and doctors, and didn't allow in any international investigators until more than a year later. I mean, they acted guilty as fuck. So they deserve to be treated as if they're guilty as fuck.

I'm not Republican and I think the way Trump handled the situation was a disgrace, but many scientists were far too quick to dismiss the possibility that it was released from a lab, probably due to political and societal pressures. Add to that China hiding and destroying evidence and obfuscating the investigation, the fact that SARS-CoV-2 was immediately able to infect human cells, and the lack of an intermediate virus, there's far too many questions to simply say "this could have occurred in nature, therefore it's impossible it came from a lab." Every option should be explored because we're going to deal with something like this again. Yes, there's racists who cling to the bio-engineered angle, but anyone who really is interested in the scientific method should leave open all possible origins.
