Cards on the table, i hate taxonomy, I know the names of literally thousands of species, and there is no real need for that. But taxonomy is, throught the bsc, 4 courses. About 15 credits out of around 200 mandatory credits.
Biology runs the spectrum from chemistry to ecology. Chemistry in biology < Biochem < Gentics < Cellular biology < Anatomy < Microbiology, Taxonomy < Ethology < Biogeography and Ecology < Evolutionary biology.
What you have to understand when it comes to the study of biology, it is basically reverse engineering alien technology. That is to say we are trying to understand and put to use complex chemichal systems (esentually insanely complex machines) that we did not and in general were not designed.
