The main issue is that China's long term growth will eclipse the US and short of an all out war there is increasingly little the US can do about it.
Also the US has much larger 'colonial' commitments than China does, having to also maintain presence in Europe and the middle east.
China's situation is somewhat similar to US Navy contingencies against the British empire in the late 19th century.
The US were banking on overstretching the royal navy in the case of a conflict, the Royal navy would have to maintain a defence of the UK and their colonies against other belligerent powers, limiting the force they could send out to America, which coupled with strong defenses, could give the US local superiority.
