Consciousness isn't a completely visual affair. There is no need to spatially conceptualize things to understand them. My guess is that the lack of imagination props up linguistic and even logical thinking. A system might be intuitively grasped by its image, but the person who can't visualize it will work harder at understanding it by first principles.
