Can we all please just admit that this is bullshit and some solutions plain don’t exist? It’s right there in the name, it’s imaginary because it was made up by hacks to justify their formulae. Numbers are what you can count with your fingers, how can I have a complex number amount of something?

Yes, this is bullshit. The domain of the square root function does not include negative numbers. The imaginary unit is defined as
$i^2 = -1$
and the complex numbers are an algebraic extension of the reals

Complex numbers don't represent a quantity, because there's no natural ordering for them.

You should think of complex numbers are points/vectors on the plain, where
z + w = the result of concatenating the vectors
z * w = the result of adding the angles and multiplying lengths

I respond because I care about education and if this is not bait, you're teachers should've emphasized that "imaginary" is a misnomer; imaginary units are every bit as usable and 'real' as real numbers.
They model very real things and no full-fledges physicist or mathematician would say otherwise.

Just because it doesn't truly exist in the real world doesn't mean it isn't a very useful idea. In the real world the only real application of the idea of numbers is using them as adjectives to describe things. 6 coconuts 10 monkeys 45 berries 3 huts. this is truly the only sense in which numbers truly exist they simply describe other things just like the words big or red or soft. However somewhere along the road we began to see numbers as nouns, that the idea of 3 isn't necesarily fixed to objects that are in groups of three there just exists a natural notion of 3 that just exists. Is this idea real? fuck no there's no such thing as three but that doesn't mean it isn't a useful idea, Just like the negative numbers. The negative numbers do not exist and cannot be used to describe something as though they were an adjective but that doesn't mean they aren't useful. For example consider the equation x + b = a, this equation can only be solved by assuming there exists some notion of -b that can undo +b and this IS useful so we let negative numbers be a thing. Maybe we could consider the equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0 well sometimes this equation requires some very strange objects in order to satisfy them but since solving those equations using those odd numbers is very helpful we just let it be a thing.

I had these same thoughts until I got to physics 2, and as you go further, you realize how important this shit is. I don't get why they introduce this concept at such a low level though; it wasn't really crucial in math-only courses until i got into diff eq.

The reason mathemayicians had to study complex numbers to begin with was because they appeared in the formula for cubic equations. But since every cubic clearly has a real solution, mathematicians had to study the matter. What is important isnt wheter number "exist" (whatever that means) but that they are usefull for solving problems and its arithmetic is logically sound.

All math is tautology, and how many different ways we can express the same value (or non-value) on different sides of the equals sign. No number is "inherently" real, they're all man-made equivalencies. If you hold up 5 fingers, you see 5 because you've equated the units on your hand to equal the concept of 5. The universe just sees some sentient organism waving around its meat sticks and that atoms that it's comprised of. You can create the concept of the square root of a negative number just as well as you can of 5. There will be mathematical concepts that have yet to be invented

Pi is better understood as a ratio than a number. You can equate a ratio to a number, but you first need the ratio to arrive at that number in the first place, and that ratio is of course the amount of diameters that would go around the same circle's circumference. At some point the ideas of the diameter and circle had to be invented, too, you can't have pi without them. Likewise, what times itself equals a negative number? You can invent a concept to complete this equation. It's not that either side is or isn't real, it's that you've created an equivalence of two different concepts, all stemming back to 1+1 = 2

I don't know a ton about quantum mechanics, but I do know that multiplication by i more or less works for phase delay in anything EM related. I would be surprised if this isn't also useful in the more probabilistic wave equation sense but I don't have the background to say for certain.

But C can be seen as a real vector space of dimension 2, in which scalar multiplication by i now corresponds to an operator.
Of course, this proves to be an annoying correspondence because the number i is a vector in this space, but the act of multiplying by i is an operator, and these are not freely interchangeable.
