which will turn a led from on to off to on etc every x amount of time? ive tried messing around with some kind of capacitor/diode/transistor circuit but im a total beginner so i thought id ask here. thanks.

thought i would share. for my special case of requirement (12hrs on 12hrs off) this is the most simple circuit for the situation, though obviously i havent done resistance calculations, and obviously not the cheapest considering the cost of solar panels vs transistors. it could be simpler still(a series circuit of led and panel) if you assume the solar panel would power the led but i havent made that assumption and its more of just a trigger for the mains to power it. anyway thanks epic bread!

you want something relying on a capacitor charge time constant to be accurate at 12hours?
seriously?
don't expect accuracy as the weather will cause dielectric leakage.
you will need a counter/timer circuit if you want accuracy.

you may need to delve into digital flip flops, JK counters...

When you say "simplest" I would assume accuracy is the actual goal, the only reliable way of having 13 hour intervals with a deviation of less than 0.1% would be to use a microcontroller like an attiny85/atmega328p and look up on youtube how to set up the counters it has with interrupts. Doing it in C is possible, although I would recomment straight assembly.

the best capacitor tolerance I remember is 1%
864 seconds per day
14.4 minutes per day.
don't remember which types, there size range nor temperature stability.

I think that is manufacturing tolerance. You could always measure or screen and then calibrate it out with resistors

OP here. Interesting points you have made, I've been pleasantly surprised to have got your noggins joggin. Seems like the long timescale for switching has made it an even more difficult problem. Seems like the best solution is actually a mechanical based solution from on anons posts, that or an e-clock(but that hides the complexity inside the timer componnent.). i guess ill hook up a physical switch to a cookoo clock lmao. no but really the solar panel seems to be the best version for x = 12hr which im fairly smug about.

You could use a shade or move your device to different latitudes to get a range of values for x

I can't even been to describe how retarded you have to be to use a solar panel for timing. Credentials better be DYI shittuber posting wank videos for clickbucks. As you are so clueless to make this just short of a bait, timing relays are cheap industrial components which directly fit your need. No worry about design elements which is a big plus for your criteria. I am going to give you a part number, but I imagine your very next post will be for a circuit design. If the power savings of previously mentioned microcontrollers and somewhat reliably designed circuitry isn't a priority then go with a CD4060, as someone else hinted at. Also fuck off deplorable homegamer.
