It's ridiculous for anyone to think they can live without the experts.
The main thing is how this discussion is presented now, and how people deliberately use this figure of the expert to push their agendas. If you can review things on your own, do it, if you can't, you depend on some expert.
For every single case of medical or scientific malpractice you could cite, including thalidomide, it was other scientists using scientific methodology that uncovered the shady shit and exposed it, not journalists or especially not conspiracy nuts like OP.
