Well Caltech is pretty famous, but it isn't as famous as the other schools like Harvard/Stanford because it is too technical, and it isn't as famous as MIT because MIT is MIT.

Doesn't make it less rigorous of a school though.

Because Caltech admits an absurdly small number of undergrads, so there aren't a lot of activities on campus. It is mostly good for grad school

iirc CalTech has the highest number of physics nobel laureates “per capita” (ie number of laureates from the school divided by #faculty or overall school size integrated over the years). it literally is probably the most elite school out there for physics. MIT is easier overall simply because it is bigger. even the institute for advanced study has a big rotation of scholars whereas CIT harbors a small core group which is even harder to get into than IAS
