You say 40 years, but it seems like basically any job that involves coding (especially all the fresh and "sexy" ML-oriented sorts of jobs) is going to only want young people anyway. I'm already kind of freaking out about this; are ML people treated like women and discarded/disregarded as irrelevant after they're 35 or so? At a certain point companies will conclude that the experience in years will not offset the decline of mental sharpness you've got in your 20s, and the point that companies decide that will probably be long before typical retirement age. With that in mind, I'll keep the farm in my back pocket. Thanks, anon.

Same. I'm 2 years in the rat race and I want to retire already. My current plan is to reach the terminal level at my company, switch to the other competing company for improved work-life balance and higher compensation, and coast as much as possible until I can FIRE in my 40s. I'm literally only in it for the money and I have a ton of other shit I want to do, maybe even farming.

You should be in a management role by that age, I would assume they expect. Why would you want to be a code monkey forever? Mental sharpness means nothing in an organization, whatever vauge decline in mental sharpness, if there even is one, is more than offset by the fact that you have around at least a decade of experience at 35.

Years of experience is usually what matters most when it comes to level. If you're 35, you're expected to have like 10-12 years of experience and be senior/staff level, and there are plenty of job postings for senior/staff engineers.

Some people want to stay as individual contributors even after a decade of experience. Sometimes, even managers switch back to becoming ICs. At least in bigger companies, there are sometimes lateral levels for ICs and managers when it comes to compensation, and there's no expectation to switch. For example, a senior-level IC might be equivalent to the lowest level for managers.

I've looked into some of those farm homestays, and I would've pulled the trigger last summer if COVID wasn't a concern. You just have to filter out the religious communes and the ones that expect you to become a permanent member.
