The relativists argument about how the aether would need to be some sort of super light diamond kind of structure is a total strawman as well. If you posit a bunch of spinning particles that move through space as a reasonably ordered periodic arrangement, you will get exactly the sort of particle and wavelike effects that are observed in light without having to posit some sort of light-carrying medium.
The mathematics of a wave moving particles and particles moving as a wave are exactly the same.
