>>12830809>meaningful/profitable this is highly dependant on the individual’s goals and passions. however you won’t get a fat salary from academia/research alone. professorship is pretty competitive in any field and funding your research can be even more competitive. this is why professors publish textbooks and popsci books for the general populace - it actually brings in decent income.
as for disciplines that are actually interesting, respectable, and grounded in reproducibility. there’s a handful of them, one of which I currently pursue. I was able to secure direct entry into a PhD program because of it.
