In these rare instances when understanding isn't enough and i need to memorize, i try to find some connection, some way of association between the name of a thing and the thing itself.
For instance i remember the name of Pholcidae because they are false friend of the Opilliones. False Pholc... close enough to help me remember.
Studying is hard at first, but if you do it enough it becomes second nature, and over time not only your concentration, but your memory will improve.
