Is there an evaluation function for tic tac toe?

It seems like such a simpel game, but coming up with a good function that returns a value telling us if a player has a edge or not seems very very hard

any ideas?

dunno about math but a flow chart works, in order of importance
1. middle
2. if you have 2 in a row, win
3. if opponent has 2 in a row, block
4. if opponent has 1 in a row, and an option for all three, block

Tic tac toe is a retarded "game", where if you start first and place your mark in any corner, you either won or you force a draw. This is the entire "edge" you talking about.

the rules of tic-tac-toe are retarded and the "edge" is determined within the first move. Generally speaking, there are way to evaluate how "good" the player is in a particular game. For instance in chess, each piece has an assigned "value" to it. A pawn is a 1, other pieces are compared relative to a pawn.

It's a solved game, you can know from any move if a win, loss or draw is possible. You can draw a lot of the game tree yourself on paper there's only like 250k games possible anyway

Here’s the complete decision tree for all tic tac toe games. It’s a “solved game” which means you can know if a win, loss or draw is possible from any state.

That has a name:heuristic.
Yes you can compute how good the situation is, by counting the number of lined up signs and those of the opponent, and the possible movements.
However in this game the decission tree is so small that you are better off doing a deep minimax search with a dumb heuristic.
