How much does research contribute to getting into grad school for different fields?

It's completely up to you and your financial preferences. I knew some people who were happy to do research for free (especially if they couldn't work during summers), some that demanded pay. It depends on the field as well.

For physics, it is essential that you do undergrad research if you want any chance at enrolling in a decent school (talking about the US, not sure how true this is everywhere else). I would say research and connections matters like 10 times more than GPA and GRE.

likely will, don't know what the chances of getting paid are yet. don't care anyways, I will get to do theoretical research that is way more fun than codemonkey BS with really smart professors that will make it way easier to get into a good grad school.

I have a physics friend who did paid research last year and is now working instead. He said that research was awful and involved 70 h/week of random coding and debugging. I'm mostly worried that I won't be able to contribute anything at all research-wise. If I was in physics or CS or something I could code-monkey, but as it is now I can't really contribute anything to the field.

that's normal. Math profs have no use of undergrads. It's the same thing for theory profs in physics, undergrads are too brainlet for them.

It was the exact same thing for me. Had to inherit a C++ project from a dude who clearly never did C++ prior, and 95% of my research was just dealing with ROOT and Geant4's bullshit.

You should forget about it. Unironically no one expects you to contribute anything meaningful and unless you're some prodigy at MIT your contribution will be marginal at best. You do gruntwork and it's meant to prepare you for the research environment in grad school. Approaching professors, attending seminars and conferences, etc. Think of it as an internship.

Currently working in a computational quantum matter lab, might have to continue into summer a bit to finish up for publication, but I'm hoping to get some sort of REU for the summer or work with a company. Nothing lined up yet, I've still yet to apply and kinda feel like I've missed the boat on a lot of stuff. I'm a sophomore physics and math major but graduating a year early hopefully so I need more research asap
