3 years and 7 stats courses later, it finally clicked. I'm by no means an expert, but now I can do what I need to do and I feel confident doing it. My advice is just to start using your own data, or making up data, and running the stats you'd be interested in running. Learn what you need to know to get by, then slowly expand that bubble until you get the hang of more techniques.
Also, save your syntax/code as much as you can, re-use it, and add detailed notes within your syntax/code so future you knows what past you was doing.
