Why is your immune system weakened after surgery? Does how immunocompromised you are depend on the invasiveness of the surgery? If so, which surgeries do the most damage to your immune system?

Your body only has so much in the way of resources and things such as surgery are quite traumatic. If you have a major surgery then your body has to devote a lot of energy towards fixing itself up afterwards.

What is the evolutionary purpose of devoting energy to repair a grievous wound, exactly? Most likely in the wild you would die of infection if the body underwent an injury similar to surgery.

My guess would be removing a fractured rib. But then you would be fed something like morphine plus a life long medication so the body doesn't attack the prosthetic rib replacement.

Your body undergoes a stress response, which elevates your cortisol.
Cortisol is the primary stress hormone, responsible for many effects in the body, one of which is inhibiting immune response.
Without it, you would basically die from the trauma and aftermath alone (ie. Addison's Disease).

It's not about evolutionary purpose, it's just a fact of life. Cell generation (wound repair, replenishing blood, sending white blood cells to the wound site, etc.) is extremely energy intensive. Your body has to make a decision between devoting resources towards repairing itself or towards the general immune system (there's tonnes of immune cells at the wound itself, hence all the pus).

I'm guessing enough of our ancestors survived to reproduce after getting wounded because their body decided to go with the former, and that a temporary reduction in immunity is a justified sacrifice if it means we're more quickly back to being able bodied.
