No. Neither python, nor octave/scilab did. Why would Julia? You have to understand that MATLAB is not popular due its language, but rather due to its wide variety of state-of-the-art toolboxes being developed and maintained by leading experts in their fields.

I'm still using C and Fortran for all of my math until I can find Julia compiler that gives me meaningful error messages.

To give you an example from my field, the control and indentification toolboxes are unparalleled. There's no python packages as good as what MATLAB offers. And yes, I searched extensively. My advisor in grad school was a massive python shill, so he was always pestering me to use python.

I've been using Julia for work a bit, and I really like it, although there's something that its ODE solvers are doing that is too clever for its own good compared to MATLAB. The speed though. the SPEED. my god you don't know if you haven't tried it.

also i think the better comparison is not MATLAB to Julia, but Python to Julia. Julia beats Python any day

the only way to replace MATLAB is by having a competitive alternative to its toolboxes (see: R for stats, a worse language with better tools). just having a better language is useless because researchers write shit code anyways no matter the language
