If you're reading any novel worth reading, you'd miss just as much by "speed reading" it as you'd miss by "speed reading" any math paper worth reading. And if you're reading a novel just to kill time, why do you care about the time it takes you to read the novel, when the purpose of reading the novel isn't to read the novel, but to kill time?
The larger point is that "speed reading" only helps you convince people who didn't read a text that you did read that text. It's useful for politicians and circus owners, not for learning or understanding.
