This is a brainlet meme, for pseuds. If you can't explain to him why polynomials are important then I'm afraid you will never do good work inside or outside of academia. Lots of people don't know what math is, or what there is to know in math, they never went looking.

It's not that I can't explain, it's that any of my explanations are going to be dismissed if that person is reluctant to learn these things in the first place. There's no reason to teach a pig how to fly, it's just not going to. One can live a perfectly fine and happy life without ever knowing what a polynomial is, so one doesn't need to know the intricacies of how their barista's coffee machine works.

That is fucking stupid. YOU are fucking stupid, you insincere pseudoscientist. He came here ASKING US for what a polynomial is, and why it's useful. These people want to learn about this stuff, they should be encouraged, and called brainlets when they're wrong. If you have a normal brain and some time on your hands, you're about as qualified to discover General Relativity as Einstein, or to do whatever else. Everyone around you is roughly as competent as the best people at about any intellectual task, at least if they avoid hard drugs, aren't handicapped in some obvious way, and weren't raised by wolves.

long story short is that a good deal of shit in the natural world can be approximated by polynomials somehow. as an example, one of the first things you learn in physics I is that a freefalling object's vertical position can be approximated as:
1/2g(t^2) + vt + x
where g is gravity (9.8 m/s^2 for most cases), v is initial vertical velocity, x is initial height above the ground, and t is how much time has passed.
