Probably old academics are also more narcissistic, so they can't face growing old and it makes this breach of roles and boundaries more likely.
For the rest of us, women of any given age range are just something we know exists. We're that age, we see them occasionally, and we move on. We're not trapped in proximity to that "bubble" forever. Hardly arguing that it's inevitable, but it's definitely not surprising either. People acting like it is are kind of retarded tbqh.
