how to motivate myself to study more?
I'm in highschool (18, not underage) and at the end of this year will go to university
If I do really well I can do medicine and thats what I want to do but I can't fucking make myself concentrate on study. I know I'm smart enough to do it but I can never make myself work
I was thinking some of you have probably had issues with disciplining yourself to study so maybe give me the best advice you have because all the advice I've had so far wasn't very helpful

sounds like one of these two things or a combination of

1) you're not actually that interested in medicine

2) you don't know how to deal with yourself.

First, you cannot "motivate yourself more", but you can build discipline.
Second, if you are not going towards a goal that you truly feel it's valuable, you're going to fail.
Third, being smart is not enough, IQ explains less than 30% of success anyway.

I didn't "discipline" myself, I understood what worked for me and I did that, discipline is often meant in a punitive way and it's useless.

Well, you'd do better to investigate what you actually about medicine, research actual job prospects and see which exams you're gonna take in college.

I've learned to understand what I liked, what I was good at and what is actually making money.
Then I found a reasonable compromise and I aimed at that.
Can't bend yourself out of shape anon, it doesn't work that way.

Medicine is too much work and incessant studying. Unless you're really going to stand out, there aren't great jobs and you'll probably end up in a CVS pharmacy somewhere. If you're already having issues studying for what you like/want, it won't be worth it to go into medicine

my sister did it and she has a guaranteed job as a doctor, she says if you have a med degree you're basically set up forever. This may be due to the country I live in. but yes maybe I wouldn't cope with the work maybe I could if I built good habits though. Would still like to try

Eh, external motivators are fine but up to a point.

Interest is actually a great intrinsic motivator which doesn't depend on external incentives, I'd be interested in what you consider "minor reasons"

Somewhat, it's more akin to the "try to follow the flow as much as possible and apply course correction as needed".

The point isn't that you won't be able to get a job after your degree, the point is that you won't make it through (or probably into) med school after undergrad. There are many filters along the way and when you aren't in it for the right reasons you are either extremely hard working to hide that or you don't make it. I'm not talking about sitting down with flash cards and putting in the study time, I'm talking more about what you do with your free time. If it isn't thinking about and contemplating what you've learned and putting things together for yourself, then you're not that interested in it. I doubled my study time because in my off time I'm wondering what if and going through situations to find where my knowledge lacks. Too many students just memorize and quickly forget and if you're not in it for the right reasons that will be you too.

ah I did forget to mention, I am aiming for a path in which I do so well in highschool I have a guaranteed position in medicine after doing my undergrad. To be honest I don't know if I would love medicine but I think if I dont see for myself I will end up regretting it insanely. I do the same thing where my mind is completely devoted to something in my free time, when I was playing a lot of chess i imagined chess games in my head for a long time and stuff like that. I think the way I wrote my post makes it seem I'm less interested in medicine than I actually am (for reasons other than money)

Ah here we go, I bet you hate maths because you see no point in it aside from solving pointless exercises, since it is only a hurdle for you to overcome (at least in your view).

See, that's the balancing act I was talking about, it's like a triangle and you want to find a barycenter

You should analyze from where your supposed regret stems, it's important so you can consider alternative routes to medicine/dentistry since future is a series of unknowns.

What about a job which doesn't pay much but doesn't wear you out and is interesting?

What about a job which pays a lot and is interesting but wears you out? (which is medicine, by the way)

3. No, I understand it is useful eventually for things like engineering and such. For now I see it as only a way to sharpen my mind. I don't think vectors and complex numbers and such things have much relevance to medicine but I know it's still useful because it helps you learn to think. I do appreciate maths more than those people I think, I do the hardest maths course there is in Australian highschool because I actually want to.
4. Yes I think the balance is in those jobs for me (although I can't know for sure yet)
5. I am afraid of becoming a failure because if I do I know I will be consumed with regret. It will come from knowing it's too late to be successful and that I wasted my oppurtunity. My oppurtunities are coming now so I know I have to succeed now
6. Yeah, like I said it's not too obvious to me what I want to do. But I think medicine or dent is most likely my best option and as it is the hardest for me to get into, if I aim for it and succeed I at least have all doors open.

I agree but the university I'm looking at offers a guaranteed spot in medicine if you crush the last year of highschool and do well in an interview. for most cases it wouldn't matter. in any case I think it's probably best I start learning how to study now.

Of course you're not giving up like that, but how you sound makes it seem like you're trying to fool them into thinking you're ready for grad school now and just have to go through the formalities when you're on here posting asking how to become disciplined. well, oxygen levels in the blood follow mathematical models.

I guess it's a matter of detail, you'll see that math is a good tool for everything which is related to the physical world, healthcare professions included.

Aside from that being afraid of failure is good, but don't see every failure as terminal, it stunts growth and limits your possibilities to learn.

Aside from that, the best hint I can do is try to push yourself without resenting yourself.

Be consistent in your habits, it is the most important thing.

If something you do in your routine works and you absolutely need to change it, do it in a small but incremental way, if something starts to go sideways return to the last "stable state".

Remember that it takes a month for a change to start becoming an habit, don't push too hard.

Sleep properly or it will impact your capability to study and remember things, you need 8 hours, it's not negotiable.

If you hang out with people who are less motivated or have life goals which you consider counterproductive, stop hanging out with them, they will drag you down.

1. Yes I am aware of how maths permeates everything. My dad knows a lot about maths and he showed me this thing which can map any 3d object with sine waves or some shit. I also think of music theory with maths but I'm not sure how to explain it super well. Basically I know what you mean.

Figure out what you want and pay more attention to what you spend your free time doing (besides wasting it on video games and 4chan). It will always be work no matter how much you like what you're doing, but if you can frequently find nuggets of inspiration in the work or material that makes all the difference
