How much truth is there to the XY gene going 'extinct'? Would it mean actual extinction of human males, or would they just be harder to come by?

I have only read popsci articles about it, but from my understanding it seems that, in the worse case scenario, the Y chromosome will just evolve to a different one, let's call it Z chromosome. Apparently that already happened in another species, or something.
