Scientifically, how the fuck did passenger pigeons go extinct?

But how did that cause their population to go all the way down to 0? This is a bird that had a population of 3 billion 200 years ago. Even if you kill off 99% of the population, that's still a population of 30 million passenger pigeons left. How is it that NONE of them survived?
