Is there a scientific explanation for why certain memes become eternal?
Like the frog making many different faces in different situations meme. Why did that become so popular?

Do you mean Pepe? It's because Pepe can be applied to almost any situation and changed to fit anything. It's like Wojaks, you can use them for anything, which is ultimately why normalfags drove them into the ground. And this isn't even scientific.

It's simply survival of the fittest. Millions of memes are created. Only a few survive. The process is very simple. You could certainly find all sorts of shared characteristics between popular memes to figure out what characteristics are conducive to the survival of a meme and what are not.

Pepes are easy to customize but not so easy that just any normie can apply them to their use. This keeps the lowest effort attempts from succeeding. A better question to ask is why some animals are funnier than others. Almost all small children giggle at frogs & toads, but hardly anyone laughs at bluejays or cardinals. How does one even define "silliness" either as affect or provocation? I kind of hated apu at first, but in use he's grown on me--frog + child + retard--partly because the synthesis almost perfectly sums up an aspect of subjectivity that resists explanation or analysis so strongly.
