It's related to that, but I think it has more to do with being emotional, and the fact that humans are extremely susceptible to cognitive bias and tribalistic, partisan thinking. Unfortunately, If you look into the behavioral economics literature on the topic, pretty much everything seems to indicate that smart people and highly educated people are just as susceptible to cognitive biases and social partisanship as normies. In fact, in some contexts, intelligent people might even be more prone to such phenomenon.
Social media only makes things worse - especially when tech companies and the government intentionally manipulated the public, and use algorithims and propaganda to drive their corporate/military/global agenda. This has been weaponized by big tech and the government, and now where in a state where most democrats literally think that republicans are racist Neonazis and Russian agents trying to impose a fascist government on the US, and most Republicans literally think the democratic party is a network of Satan worshipping communists attempting to institute a communist dictatorship.
