Well that trend started after page and brin stepped down from google and let an mba holder run the company. page and brin both hold engineering degrees and so did the executive board at the time as well as most of the employees because they understand the importance of a degree. now when leadership changed, all of a sudden google wasn't producing anything new and many "self-taught" people started coming in and working. bottom line is, yes, a degree is VERY important not only to be taken seriously, but to actually produce something worthwhile.
