I believed the propaganda growing up that Math wasn't important and now I'm an adult who doesn't know basic algebra and I realize now it's the most important thing. :(

I wasn't referring to algebra when I was saying it's the most important thing to learn. It's the most important because all the highest paying jobs and degrees require higher level math. Along with this a good number of topics I'm interested in getting into like economics, statistics, programming, and cosmology involve math.

Which has always struck me as odd. Mathematicians have amazing powers of initial abstraction and application of solutions to large problem sets.

Mathematics just requires such extreme introspection, self consciousness, and trying to tear things apart. Then even after you do become insanely knowledgeable, most people don't have faintest idea of what it is you actually know. They all treat mathematics as something very difficult, when it is in fact not if you have a good base and practice. This suggestion being reinforced hundreds of times leads children to believe that they might actually be dumb and they start rejecting maths. It doesn't help that the masses are easily affected by movies.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm taking an entire year to relearn my math fundamentals from highschool. Is a year a reasonable amount of time to get to algebra to calculus I proficiency or is that unrealistic?

The way I see it you have 3 options: complain about it, accept that you are not good at math and move on with your life, or try to get better.
If trying to get better is something that interests you, I recommend https://www.khanacademy.org/ .Literally start from the kindergarten modules, and work your way up the ladder of complexity. The main reason why math gets a bad rap is because learning something new is highly dependant on understanding the things that is is based on. Also, keep in mind that math, the way it is taught, was designed by humans, some really intelligent, but human nonetheles. What a human can understand (unless severe mental retardation) another human can.

Mathematics can be viewed as a replacement to current thinking or as a series of steps to achieve a desired outcome, which is usually translating an external problem space for someone else into more bite-sized chunks.

Algebra is substitution, abstraction, and expression. If you view maths as a recipe to follow it is much faster and easier to learn without attributing magical thinking to it. However for most the idea of mathematics is trying to grasp how to put boundaries around infinity which is where they fall flat.

It helps to think of math as the translation process of making something smaller (factoring) so others don't feel emotionally overwhelmed by numbers.

Push through is the only real thing one can do, in truth. If you abandon or time waste then you only end up with those that will abandon or waste your time because that would be the shared language.
