You could just as easily say that 0.999... is equal to the number below it that is separated by the same infinitesimal amount that separates it from one.
If that's the case, then each number beneath 0.999... is equal to the one right below it.
That means that, if you follow this through for long enough, you will eventually be able to conclude that 1=0
