probably a physician because of the classism and elitism in the healthcare field all around. When I was pre med I did it for altruism and quickly realized that there's really nothing altruistic about doctors or dentists. With a physician license, I can at least pretend I'm making people's lives better and improving healthcare outcomes. In America, the Coronavirus has further highlighted how lacking the leaders in healthcare actually make a difference in health outcomes and often inadvertently make them worse.

I disagree on med school being harder. First two years of both have the same didactics + dental students have to get their hours in preclinical while med students can go home after class and study

I've said harder, not more complex, stuff in med are often rote learning and memorizing, can't wait for AI to lift this fucking useless burden from me.

Thread derailment but since its medicine: Whats the deal with electric shocks, defibrillation and the different heart beating patterns? Is there a science to it or is it just empirical trial and error?
From what i have read an electrical shock can induce ventricular fibrillation, and yet another shock can correct it. Apparently doctors induce fibrillation on purpose to do a live test of implantable defibrillators. How is this done?

Yeah, there's a science to it. Basically when there's an aberrant rhythm, it's many times due to a place in the heart generating an electrical pulse when it shouldn't be, or many places generating pulses. Providing a shock can polarize all the cells for a moment and allow the controlling node (sinoatrial node) to "direct" the electrical activity. For the implantable, you can look up implantable cardioverter-defibrillators.
