their advisor admitted that they got their PhD’s because they worked for years as unpaid grad students (they actually paid their own tuition) and even though their work was pretty much nonsense (it had some stuff on quantum groups but the physics was vapid and they put in ridiculous interpretations) they were given their PhD out of basically pity. just goes to show how low the standards are in europe for doctorates

It's pretty much universally acknowledged their papers were ultimately nonsense and they were given their degrees out of pity. They weren't particularly talented.

People thought it was Sokal 2.0 but turns out they were just a bit dim and deluded. They only did it because they falsely claimed to have PhDs in a book or something.
