People seriously overestimate BCIs. You cannot just stab a few wires into the brain and expect immersive VR or controlling dozens of robotic arms or instant learning or other shit like that. BCIs will at best allow a cripple to control a single robotic arm, but that control will be slow and shitty.

On the subject of immersive VR, BCIs will never allow for that. You cannot inject an entire bodies worth of sensory information into a random part of the brain. The level of rewiring and re-architecturing of the brain required to allow for this would be absurd. So many signals would have to be rerouted. Many brain structures previously used for you know, thinking would now be repurposed for processing this new sensory input. Even if you could physically hook up enough connections reliably enough to implemented immersive VR, it would probably turn the subject into a retard due to the amount of brain matter repurposed for IO processing.

And pray tell how are you going to force the brain to rewire itself in such a way. When you add your brain inplant and start injecting signals how do you expect the brain to know what they mean, and then carefully route them to exactly where they need to go. No assuming the brain will even be able to sufficiently adapt to such signals, it will do so in a haphazard way, it will need to process the signals locally because it has no idea what they are and cannot possibly route them to where they need to go. Even if the signals eventually find there way to where they should be, a huge amount of brain area will have been repurposed to deal with these new inputs.

As soon as there is a marketable reason to want one.
Right now the most appealing use for BCI is for medical purposes potentially communicating with prosthesis. For everyone else they see "brain chip" and start ranting about mind control and big brother. That kind of visceral kneejerk reaction is something you are going to be going up against if you want to make non medical BCI profitable. If you could provide the average joe a reason to want such a device, some feature or convenience that they couldn't live without then you have a shot, until then why would anyone want to pay money to have a hole drilled into their skull?

I imagine it'll start with just translating real movements of your whole body directly to a game character. Like wearing an extremely accurate full-body tracking suit. Eventually it'll have the option to have the BCI completely hijack limb movement to enable much greater freedom of movement in game. As you were saying, paralyze the limbs of the real person so that they can run around and do whatever they want in a game movement wise without being bound by room size. I believe both of those could happen in this half of the decade because those are both the easy part. They'll be working with preexisting VR hardware. The real hurdle is going to be attempting to enable it to immerse its user by itself (well, obviously linked to a nearby computer because you certainly aren't fitting the hardware for VR into a tiny chip like Neuralink or even several). Another potential hurdle will be getting it to not fully paralyze the user and have their body go on as though it were asleep in the real world completely divorced from what happens in the game (i.e. if they drown in a game you don't want them to start spastically breathing or have their body think it's dying). Making the user experience the game without feeling it will probably be a big issue. Not only do you have to deal with the normal reading and writing the BCI but you also have to read and overwrite the emergency signals from the brain. Considering how many different parts of the body can be effected in dire situations I imagine that won't be done during this half of the century.

The BCI wouldn't be making them drown in real life. They would experience the drowning in the game and since it would seem completely real they would start to freak the fuck out and their brain would start acting like they really were drowning.

Like I said, the problem is making them experience the game without actually feeling it (or better put, feel the game without having it actually effect the body in any negative way). At the level where we're concerned about this is the level where we'll be wanting the user to be able to feel the wind on their face and smell the ocean in the game. What you're talking about is basically the stage three where it's a full VR experience but instead of a headset it's just the BCI. Obviously that's a massive step up and would enable absolutely magical things, but it's not truly a "full dive" experience.

I do not think it is even possible, at least not with anything remotely resembling current technology. Instead of a brain implant that attempts to add an entire additional bodies worth of IO (which is just absurd when you think about it), what is more feasible is to splice into the neves entering the brain so that you can switch between input from the body, and input from the VR interface. This would allow the brain to retain its original architecture and not have to deal with a second bodies worth of IO just crudely forced into it.

It does have very very tiny probe wires embedded in the brain by surgical robot that read/write the potentials of neighboring neurons(thousands of neurons) and gets a lot of information that way. They will probably become viable in the next few years, but I doubt they will be as commonplace as the smartphone for quite some time. The smartphone was pretty much just a smaller computer, which people were already familiar with, so it was easier for people to accept it. I doubt the average person will want to put a chip in their brain, it's too new and experimental, plus the massive ethical implications.

Agreed. It's a difficult problem even there, but possible. Sadly I haven't heard of anyone actively working on this problem - I think we're still a few fundamental breakthroughs away.

In the more immediate term I think we should just look forward to nerve stimulation all around the body. The device would be embedded in a form fitting garment. The basics exist today so it can be refined and scaled up over several years. It wouldn't feel like real life, but it would be fun and it would start to give software developers a reason to encode tactile and thermal information into game engines. Then when the spinal interface arrives we at least won't be starting from scratch.
