I don't think there's a general rule, you can choose other indicator functions and get the same thing.

if you're unfamiliar with the term indicator function, I mean $f \colon \mathbb R \to \mathbb R$ has $f(x) = \begin{cases}1 & x \in \mathbb Q \\ 0 & x \not \in \mathbb Q\end{cases}$ for each $x$ . This is not continuous because any neighbourhood of any point has both rationals and irrationals.
