How do we get the world population back to 1850 levels in time to avoid 1.5C degrees of warming? The only thing I can think of is a nuclear winter.

The greatest part is you have the virus to wipe out the elderly as well. Of course, we'll need to find something to wipe out Africa, but once food prices skyrocket, humanitarian aid there won't even be financially viable at that point.

Maybe in the extremely short term, like 2 years after the great human dying, but in the long term wilderness reclamation and reductions in CO2 output would likely render global warming a non-issue for 50 years or so, until the human population rebounds.

Who cares ? Why would you want to preserve the climate if you want to kill off most of humanity anyway ? For the sake of animals ? They would suffer more in a nuclear winter .
