Ideally the job where you can be as elitist as you want with math is being a math tenured professor because truly high level math research is not developed with concrete application in mind.
Also you are overestimating what the average joe maths level is, you'd be amazed to discover that they don't even know what a basic limit is, that should tell you that , generally at the moment, you don't need a lot of maths to go around in the world because the world is built for the average person.
Having said that, there are fields which use math that can be profitable, from electrical engineering to study ways to improve the aerodynamic drag of trains to reduce the power consumption, it depends on what you want to do in the future.
