I dont think it was luck. First there are bools, light and dark. Then you get various repetitions of light. Cyclical repetitions, cumulative ones, and linear ones. Cumulative would be fibonacci or exponential, linear is euclidean addition, and cyclical would be remaining in bools or different modularities

No, of course not.
Mathematics is discovered, not invented, and natural numbers are easier to discover than reals and addition and multiplication are easy to discover as well.

well you could probably start with things that are more complex and derive arithmetic from those but thats not every intuitive for us humans.

alternatively, you can start with simpler things like set theory but again thats not very intuitive for us. yes we have done it to establish logical foundations but in real work you usually ignore foundational stuff and start from a set of intuitive principles.

being very anal, not strictly all. addition and multiplication is only fundamental to areas that only deal with real (more generally) complex numbers. things that look at more abstract structures won't have a whole lot of it. for example abstract algebra, category theory, set theory. nitpick ik
