I changed the engine oil on my motorbike today but everyone on /o/ said I was a fucking idiot falling for the big oil meme. Is changing your engine oil really a scam?

People on /o/ are retarded, not that I go on there really. But then again most boards are filled with no-nothing retards who you shouldn't trust too much. If you wanted a car/motorbike related question properly answered then you're better off going on some boomer forum like pistonheads.

I general however its not a scam, you should change your oil and you need to to keep your engine running smoothly but how often you need to change it will depend on the vehicle, the type of oil, how often you use it and what sort of driving you use it for. I don't have much/any experience with motorcycles so I don't know if they really differ in this respect to cars but IMO generally most people don't need to change the oil every year and could get away with it once every two years, depends also on how many miles you've done since the last change.

I've never there specifically, but I've been in enough specialized forums to know that the amount of snake oil, confirmation bias, and overall ignorance is rampant in those places, so personally I don't trust anything unless backed with hard data. You better stick to whatever the manufacturer says: if they say to change the oil every day or every two miles, you do that.
