This wasn't a hobby or a goof on Sinclair's part. He truly believed he had solved all of these problems with the C5 battery powered trike. It was of course a complete and utter failure.
Smart people still come up with dumb ideas. Because of access to resources, they are given the benefit of the doubt and can often pour huge amounts of resources into a bad idea that would never have attracted any investment if they came form someone else.
