Imagine this thought experiment:
I have an iron rod, 1km long and 6" in diameter, with a lever at my end
It is connected between two houses 1km apart, and my friend in the other house cannot see outside; he can only see the very end of the rod
When I twist the rod clockwise with the lever, how long before my friend notices the rod moving counter-clockwise?
