It's interesting. My imagination is not too bad, but I don't feel like I'm seeing things, it's more like 'knowing' there's an apple.
On the other hand I have superlucid dreams from time to time, where I can consciously inspect very detailed things while I don't have to think about them - it's like the brain is fully capable of maintaing consciousness outside of the simulation process. Imagine if you could use this skill everyday.

I'm pretty much a 4. In some ways my visualisation is like vision in one's extreme periphery; it *feels* detailed unless I scrutinise it. If you ask me to visualise a ball on a table, I'll have the sensation of seeing something, but totally devoid of detail; ask me "what colour is the ball?", "what material is the table?", etc. and I'll have no answer.

I've never understood these things. I know what an apple looks like. If I close my eyes, I still know what an apple looks like. But I see pure black, and I'm pretty sure everyone else does too. It's pure physics: when your eyes close, light cannot enter and so you see pure black.

This problem looks like a definition based one. I could easily claim I see an apple, since I have some abstract vision of what an apple is supposed to be. But that's just higher level cognition and if I'm being honest it's pure black. This effect is based purely on self reporting where people mistakenly think they're being asked if they can envision what an apple looks like.

Not true, seeing can be memorized and memories easily altered. Seeing itself ends up being a series of electrical impulses which are susceptible to disturbances which make hallucinations possible.

But the brain can't perceive light on it's own. Light needs to be converted to a local language which the brain can understand and modify which in this case is electrical impulses which can be memorized. Do you not have a memory?

When you imagine an apple, you can either visuals the apple, see the word, hear the word, a combination of these things, or none, because you just take a moment to abstract the object in your mind. Visualising just means seeing with the mind's eye: Either imagining something in a blankness or in a room, in its own space or alternatively imagining it overlaid onto what you're already seeing. I personally get quick flashes of imagery or general associations when processing any given thing.

Actually seeing something would be schizo (visual hallucination), this is not that. For example if you have internal voice only, you likely can't speak externally and internally at same time. So if you speak internally, you become mute externally. Your brain interprets hearing via your cochlea. No sound hitting the cochlea, no hearing. Your brain interprets touch via the CNS. If you have nerve damage at a specific part, e.g. thumb, you experience no touch sensation.

For example, I can imagine the smell of coffee right now despite there not being any coffee brewing in my house. Yes, I can do that, but I cannot visualize anything. If you tell me to think about an apple, I can only visualize it for a moment, and then I can only think about it verbally. I can "think" about graphs of functions, for example, but I cannot visualize them. It's all abstract for me.

What I 'saw' in my head was a full-motion image. I even turned the apple over, and around, and looked at various parts of it, then sliced it in half and looked at the white flesh within and the seeds at it's core. I can *almost* taste it, it's more like an after-taste of an apple.

It irritates me though when I can't 'see' things perfectly though. Just tried poking through my freezer mentally, for instance, and I know there's loaves of bread in there, chicken breast in ziplock bags, frozen veggies, etc, but I can't get the exact count of those objects. In the cupboard where I keep cans of soup, I can't 'see' the exact text of the labels. I know WHAT is in there, how many cans, what's in them, but the exact words allude me.

It's about seeing something in your mind's eye, not your field of vision. It's nothing like a hallucination or dream

Think of it this way: try to remember a song you like and listened to recently. Now try to remember how the song goes. Do you "hear" it in your head? That "mind's ear" is like how the "mind's eye" works

You're triggering many of the same internal representation neurons when doing this; just not the perceptual ones.

If you can't do either of these things, then you just have to accept your brain is unlike most people's

A friend of mine figured out he has this issue (#5). Absolute shock to him, and I really can't figure out how he does things. I rely on my mental images for basically everything I do. Not just pictures, but I can imagine forces between objects and complex machines pretty well too.
