There is actually a hypothesis that this is how ancient Greeks first realised that the Earth is round - they sailed a lot across Mediterranean and Black Sea and could see that as you go north, new stars appear on the northern horizon and familiar ones disappear on the southern horizon - and the opposite happens if you reverse the direction and go south.
