it's obviously organic, and stuck to a rock in the middle of a desert, so it is a fossil. but a fossil of what?

turtle skeleton

over time the turtle shell frayed/broke away and the spine was left intact since it was protected by the shell long enough to partially fossilize

Maybe a cut gastropods apex. Yours is slightly asymmetrical. Check nullarbor plain for fossil guideish books. Often somebody already found something similar.
